Heroine Joan of Arc (Jeanne d’Arc) was actually a French peasant girl who ended up being burned at the stake, back in year 1400. Despite her young age, she accomplished to lead an army, crown a king and light a spark of hope that became a turning point for France, in the 100-year long war with England. According to herself, it was a calling from God that drove her. No woman in our history has gone through so much like her.

She was strong-willed beyond the usual and had a determined personality.

She was not subject to what contemporaries thought was correct or incorrect.

She went her own way, and fought to the last for what she believed in.

There is actually no one who knows exactly how she looked.

All photos and drawings of her are different. We have come into possession of an old drawing representing her. Naturally we have to use this for a product line."

My new vintage French table

Last Saturday some of my friends & I went to Camas Antiques in down town Camas.

They have very good deals throughout the store going on now.

Here is what I came home with!

My new vintage little table.

Peeled off paint with such a great patina.

Pink, green, turquoise and some other shades peeking through.

Just the right crazing, that made it to irresistible....

Right now it is is sitting in my living room,

but waiting for that "perfect spot"

(if I can ever find it)

Yep, quite primitive too.

The word French, I just threw in there,

because it makes it sound more Chic....yes???

Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

My end of October dried Hydrangeas

My favorite hydrangeas are hanging their heads, while fall surely is upon us, here in the Pacific NW.

I have no clue how other people go about to dry the blooms. Google, if you want the correct recipe....
As I managed to save a few, the day before the rain sat in, I simply just stuck each stem on the inside
of a big woven basket.

Space them apart and let sit in room temperature till completely dry.
The dead leaves are easy to flick off.

Faded to perfection! Decorative, as only nature can do it!

Lazy dinner on a whim

Saturdays are not my day to cook dinner, that's for sure!

So here's what I did:

In a cast iron skillet

add olive oil,

salt & pepper,

cut up potatoes,

onion.

Place skillet on the middle rack in oven, 415F, till done (at least 35-45 min)

Roll up 1 slice of Havarti cheese (my favorite)
Salsa (from Barn House)

Voila -Dinner that is easy, filling and tasty, w/ lots of good stuff ;o)

Dessert anyone??
Boocone Dolce:
Swiss meringues drizzled with semi-sweet chocolate, layered with fresh fruit and chantilly cream,
was my guilty pleasure, after yesterday's lunch with my youngest daughter.
Highly recommended from Papa Haydn on 23rd in Portland.

Back from Vacation

Back home from 10 days of vacation to sunny Hampton, Virginia.

My husband and I did all the usual tourist stuff;-

Williamsburg, Jamestown, The Boardwalk etc.

Williamsburg is one of the oldest towns from the first English colony.

Just had to throw this in (-my hubby) -))

As soon as we started to look to where the locals

would go, then we just used our hotel as base;-

left in the morning, came back in the evening.

Drove around for hours and found beautiful beaches, state parks

and restaurants!

My husband got in a solo session of kiting at the Eastern Shore,
by Cape Charles.

Me, I was happy just "to do nothing".

On my doorstep today!

WOW! That's all I can say!

The vocabulary to compliment the BARN HOUSE
annual Summer Flea market

is already used up;- THE BEST of the North West

(-and really, I don't think there is anything comparable).

Hundreds & hundreds of people waiting in line, before opening time.

Lucky me, got to help out in Joyce, aka Calamity Jane's, space,

so even if I made a firm statement last fall,
that Little Cottage would not be on the road anymore,

I was ecstatic to be back with "my people".

This little kitten was eager to check out Joyce's treasures.
I got a 2 second hug and then he went off to join his other
3 siblings in the arms of many happy children!

Giving Up Chocolate

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, got out ten dollars and asked,'If I give you this money, will you buy chocolate with it instead of dinner?'

'No, I had to stop eating chocolate years ago', the homeless woman told me.
'Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?' I asked.
'No, I don't waste time shopping,' the homeless woman said. 'I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.'

'Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?' I asked.

'Are you NUTS!' replied the homeless woman. I haven't had my hair done in 20 years!'

'Well, I said, 'I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out for dinner with my husband and me tonight.'

The homeless Woman was shocked. 'Won't your husband be furious with you for doing that?

I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting.'

Easter - A special time, for reflection & celebration, ahead of us!
A time for family gatherings, since my oldest son that moved to Norway in December, is coming home tomorrow for 2 weeks vacation!
If only my youngest daughter, that lives in Florida, could have been here too, my happiness would be complete!

Image & recipe (loosely translated by me) from VAKRE HJEM & INTERIOR's blog

This tasty cake will be served at my Easter table:
Cake
200 g flour
175 g soft unsalted butter
200 g sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons vanilla extract. (Not to be confused with vanilla essence. Extracts is important so that the cake should get its proper taste and aroma, or use two vanilla sticks that you scrape the seeds out of.)
1 / 2 teaspoon baking soda
1.5 cups sour cream
40 g baking cocoa

Chocolate Frosting
75 g soft unsalted butter
1 tablespoon light syrup
175 g dark chocolate
1 1 / 4 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
300 g powder sugar

The ingredients should be at room temperature before you begin. When the butter is soft it is easier to work with. You need two greased round forms of approx. 20 cm (8 in) in diameter.

Cake
Stir eggs and sugar until fluffy and then add butter. Mix all the dry ingredients together and pour over egg mixture while gently mixing the batter. Spread the batter into the two forms. Bake at 180 degrees C (355F) for approx. 35 minutes.Test with a cake stick, as soon as the mixture no longer sticks to, it is ready.
Cool cakes on a rack for approx. 10 minutes before taking them out of the forms.

Chocolate Frosting/Cream
Melt the chocolate, cool slightly and mix it with soft butter. Add syrup, sour cream, vanilla extract and powdered sugar.

Decorate the cake with chocolate cream and add real or edible flowers. Bon appetit!

Monticello Antique Marketplace on an early Friday morning,

can be a sweet place to be!

Specially when it's the opening day of the Spring & Garden show.

The fun part is that many of the vendors are there to "meet & greet" too!

Here are a few pix from both the show area and the store:

The creative displays are pure eye candy!

Show last until May 30th and vendors are stocking dutifully.

As breaks are needed, I'll strongly suggest a visit to Monti's Cafe.

After a few hours shopping, we headed over to my very favorite restaurant in Portland

"Mother's Bar & Bistro"

The decor of chandeliers and mirrors are great,

but the food is even better!

Monticello Antique Marketplace is having their annual Spring Home & Garden show,

starting tomorrow at 8AM.. Running through May 30th.

I am heading over there with some of my very dear friends and expecting to have a grand time!

Afterwards we're planning brunch at my favorite Portlandia restaurant (by the waterfront).

Camera will be in tow, I will share with y'all some of the highlights next week!

jalapeño, lime, salt & pepper.

Corn chips.

Salsa together with oven baked cod & rice is YUMMY!

25 YEARS OLD TOMORROW!

Sylvia, my second daughter and third child, turns 1/4 of a century,

while I have recently made the 1/2 century mark -)))

Still, it doesn't feel that long ago since she was my pretty, little baby!

As she lives clear across the States, all the way in Florida, we only get to see her a few times a year!

She's hard at work and sells property on the Northern part of the Mexico Gulf.

Nothing in life is more precious than my family & faith!
